SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET
Live from Austin, Texas

"The Sir Douglas Quintet is back!" What a delight to see this title pop up in the series of Austin City Limits performances that New West has been issuing. Available separately both on CD and DVD is this classic 'reunion" performance of the Sir Douglas Quintet from January 21, 1981. Doug looks sweet in his navy jumper and long white scarf (ascot?), and his voice is even sweeter. Close your eyes and it's hard to believe it's not 1967, when Doug Sahm and the boys were the Texas answer to the British Invasion. Augie Meyers' signature organ licks trade off with the rhythm section and blend with Doug's laid-back delivery so as to leave no question as to who are the original Texas groovers. Classics such as "Mendocino," "She's About A Mover," and "Who Were You Thinking Of?" sit beautifully alongside such covers as "96 Tears," "Who'll Be The Next In Line," and the fittingĀ "(Is Anybody Goin' To) San Antone." For those who never had the chance to see Doug Sahm while he was still with us, or who want to revisit the excitement of this musical legend, this package is a truly a pleasure. -EDWARD BURCH
