The first--and only--time I saw Mark Kozelek perform live (with his previous band, Red House Painters), he didn't spend much time on stage, but he managed to punctuate his abbreviated set with a few covers. In recent years, Kozelek has displayed a fondness for a good cover tune--he did an acoustic album of AC/DC covers, helped organize (and contributed to) a John Denver tribute album. Whatever his choice of others' material, Mark Kozelek manages to render a song in his own distinctive and identifiable style; in other words, if were you not familiar with the original, it would be easy to mistake it for a Kozelek composition. For Tiny Cities, Kozelek has chosen to offer up a collection of Modest Mouse covers. Fans of Modest Mouse may discover a new level of meaning to the songs; newcomers may even be persuaded to "go to the source" based upon Kozelek's sincere reading of the material. But even if you do not care for the Modest Mouse, if you are a Sun Kil Moon fan, then you will find plenty to love. -EDWARD BURCH
